[D9 LA] Event: Around the Maypole

A number of maypoles have been erected out on the meadows, their ribbons tossed gaily on the breeze. A number of children are already circling one of the poles, singing merrily in round.

Acorn, acorn,
Soil, silt, sand,
Grow forth the oak tree,
Pride of all the land

Experimental Rule: For this event ONLY, rolls of 6 gain an extra roll! Add ‘e6’ to your roll code!

Step One: Learning the Steps
First you must try to remember the steps from your childhood, or pick them up from the others already taking part.
Roll: Awareness (Notice) or Cunning (Memory), Formidable (TN12)
Failure: This is harder than it looks. -1 Ribbon Points.
Success (one+ degree): Careful attention has its benefits, gain +1B to Step Three of the Event, and +1 Ribbon Point per degree of success.

Step Two: Singing a Little Song
Between iterations of the rhyme, the children know a seemingly endless number of verses. Add your own.
Roll: Awareness (Perform Song) or Deception (Bluff), Formidable (TN12)
Failure: Stuttering, the words don’t fall into place. -1 Ribbon Points.
Success (one+ degree): Some clever words and tidy rhyme is all you need. +1 Ribbon Point per degree of success.

Step Three: Doing a Little Dance
The maypole dance must be done exactly right, a single over when you should have under, or changing direction too early or too late, will make a mess of the final result.
Roll: Agility (Balance, Dance) or Deception (Act), gain 1B if you succeeded at Step One, Challenging (TN9)
Failure: At least the other poles look pretty. -1 Ribbon Points.
Success (one+ degree): If someone ruined these ribbons, it wasn’t you. +1 Ribbon Point per degree of success.

Ribbon Points: The player with the most Ribbon Points at the end of the Event gains 1 Glory.

[Mariessa Tremaine]

Mariessa remembered well the steps, and the parts that made up the dance and song. They were dear memories to her of a time when their family had been happy together. So she sang the rhymes and tunes pleasantly along with everyone else, and she moved in step as she should - clearly taking after the Lord Tremaine there!

Jynessa looked at the children and let out a small sigh. This was more of Mari's forte than mine as a child. She crossed her arms and tried to think of times she had seen this before. However, it seemed that she had other matters on her mind. I wonder if Rayley liked this when she was younger. Where is she, anyways? I wonder if I can see her once more before we go...

Then a group of children came to her, expecting her to come up with some sort of rhyme. She looked to sky and eventually came up with one that would work.

Once I saw a little bird
Go hop, hop, hop,
So I said: – little bird,
Will you stop, stop, stop?

Then I was going to the window
To say "How do you do?"
But he shook his little tail,
And a way he flew!

She then fell into line with the ribbons and took extra care to follow along rather than try anything daring. To her relief, it appeared that her form was excellent for the event.

Maypoles had not been a significant part of Terrance's childhood. He was familiar with them, but vaguely. Even so, half-remembered steps and words came together as he joined in. He couldn't remember actually doing this before, but it seemed he must have.

Claryssa joined the festivities, having seen a few maypoles at various Highgarden events. She hadn't really partaken in them much but she decided change that. She knew none of the rhymes, but she hoped the children would forgive her, smiling and laughing along with them. She managed to do quite well with the dancing and actual creation of the maypole. She felt good that she'd at least not ruined the final result.

Lily had clearly forgotten more about the maypole dance than most. She heard a song sung by one of the children:

Once, there was a maiden…
…who stood at the center of every dance.
Back then, she knew all the dances.
She never missed a step.
One day, she heard something in the music, as a singer dropped the beat.
It taught her of the joy of dancing poorly.
She started dancing more and more awry.
“Love has no rules,” she said.

She smiled and danced.
