Elwood saluted to his wife with his lance before snapping his visor shut. His full plate and large shield gleamed in the sunlight. But it was mostly for show, and the young man who had been required to forgo martial training for learning stewardship, failed to bring his lance out towards his opponent sufficiently, and the wood lance slid off Lorent's shield.

Lorent accepted another lance, his massive white steed prancing a few steps as they lined up at the beginning of the list. The horses thundered towards each other and, once again, Lorent's lance smacked hard against Elwood's shield, breaking into pieces.

This time, the heir was unable to maintain his seat, and fell from the saddle. Squires rushed to rein in the horse and help the young man to his feet, dazed and disgusted within himself, stumbling towards the healer's area to be looked over.
