A large field has been marked off in front of Grassfield Keep’s Great Hall. On three sides are wooden stands for spectators. Some have been shaded with canvas, but the majority of the seats are uncovered. At the top of the Event Grounds is a raised platform, five high-backed wooden chairs sit in the shade of the peaked canvas roof.
Garlands of flowers are draped about the stands and the Lord’s box. At the beginning of the Festival, the field is grassy and verdant, but the Grand Melee on Day 6 see the turf quickly torn and churned by the feet of the competitors. By the end of the Joust on Day 8, scarcely a blade of grass remains to be seen.
