Language will not be considered an Ability for the purposes of this game. All characters are deemed to be proficient with the Common Tongue, and literate if they’re Status Rank is 3 or higher.

Corollary to this ruling, the Benefit Polyglot cannot be purchased for this game.

Additional languages are exceedingly rare in Westeros. For the purposes of this game, each language will be treated as a Benefit, purchasable with Destiny Points and subject to the usual limitations. Additionally, all languages require GM approval. If you are literate with the Common Tongue, you are also deemed to be literate with any additional languages you purchase.

Modified Benefit: Maester
In addition to the bonuses gained from this Benefit, Maesters also gain the Language: High Valyrian Benefit for free. This Benefit does not count towards your character’s maximum starting Benefits. Acolyte Maesters (Status 2) are deemed to be literate without the purchase of the Benefit Literacy.

Modified Benefit: Eloquent
Replace the requirements with Benefit: Knowledge Focus (Any Language). You act first in any Intrigue conducted in a language you have Knowledge Focus in.

New Benefit: Language: [Various]
You have studied an additional language. Perhaps you are a trader who deals with Pentoshi merchants, or a sailor who has picked up Ibbenese, or a student of Valyrian. If you are literate, by Status Rank or by the Benefit Literacy, then you are also literate in this language.

New Benefit: Language Mastery: [Various]
Requirements: Language: [tongue you wish to master] and Knowledge Focus (tongue you wish to master).
You have gained a thorough command of a chosen language. You speak the tongue like a native (if this is not your native tongue), and may know multiple dialects, if appropriate. If you are not already literate, you gain the ability to read and write in this language.

New Benefit: Literacy
For characters of Status Rank 1 or 2, there is little opportunity to learn letters and numbers. You are, however, the exception. Perhaps you are the child of a merchant, or a maester took interest in you, but you are deemed literate in any languages you know.
